My name is Simon Shih and I am 52 years old. I am originally from Houston, Texas and worked in the oil and gas industry for the last 20 years. Last year, the day before my 52nd birthday, I lost my job and since I hated my job for the last 10 years. I decided it was time for a change.
I always wanted to try my hand at acting so I rented an airbnb for 3 months and signed up for some acting classes and moved to Atlanta on January 6, 2023. I had never acted before and didn’t even know if it was something I would enjoy but during a scene in my theater class, I fell in love with it and extended my stay to the end of 2023 to see if I could make a living at it.
My plan, since I gave myself a deadline, was to do anything and everything possible to give myself the advantage to be successful. That included spending the money for great headshots, taking acting classes, going to any and all networking events.
Once I got my headshots and a couple of classes on my resume, I started submitting to agencies. 4 responded that they were interested and I signed with Baron Entertainment on February 17th.
I was auditioning for anything and everything I could find on Backstage, Actor’s Access, Casting Networks, and Facebook and I finally landed my first role in March. Since then, I booked more roles and as of yesterday, I have booked 32 speaking roles; 18 I had to turn down. Some of them because of scheduling conflicts. Some because of lack of pay. Some because the project wasn’t very good.
One of the things I’ve noticed, the more and more I work is that almost everyone I’ve worked with knows everyone else I’ve worked with. I seem to be at a certain level of filmmaking and wanted to move up to a level where I landed more mainstream work. I couldn’t do this alone, so I signed with a TLCE Talent Management to help me accomplish that.
Since getting to Atlanta, I have been helping other actors with their auditions, IMDb accounts, emails, resumes and anything else they need help with. Often times, the business side of acting gets ignored, but I feel it is just as important as the acting side of acting. This blog outlines the things I have done and my thoughts on all things acting. Thanks for dropping by and I hope the information here helps you.
