Embracing Critique: A Guide for Actors

I had an actor reach out to me about a year ago through DM. She wanted my opinion on a monologue she had done. When people ask me for my opinion, I am happy to give it, but I’m very straightforward and honest. As I was giving her my notes, which included her need to take acting classes, she immediately got defensive.

As an actor, feedback and critique are essential parts of the journey. While it can be difficult to receive criticism, learning to approach it with an open mind is crucial for growth and improvement. Here are some tips to help you navigate critique in the acting industry:

  1. Separate Yourself from the Feedback
It’s important to remember that critique is not a personal attack. The feedback you receive is targeted at your performance, not your worth as a person. Try to avoid taking comments as a reflection on your character or abilities. Approach each note as an opportunity to enhance your craft.
  2. Listen Actively
When receiving feedback, resist the urge to become defensive. Instead, listen intently and ask clarifying questions if needed. Avoid interrupting the person providing the critique – their perspective may offer valuable insights you hadn’t considered.
  3. Identify Specific, Actionable Notes
The most helpful feedback will give you concrete, actionable steps to improve your performance. Look for notes that highlight specific areas you can work on, whether it’s your diction, physicality, emotional connection, or something else. Avoid getting bogged down in vague or overly subjective comments.
  4. Express Gratitude
After receiving critique, take a moment to thank the person providing the feedback. Acknowledge that you appreciate their time and input, even if some of the notes are challenging to hear. This gesture demonstrates your maturity and commitment to growth.
  5. Implement Changes Thoughtfully
Once you’ve had time to process the feedback, identify the most impactful notes and develop a plan to address them. Experiment with different approaches and be open to trying new techniques. Remember that progress takes time and consistency.

Embracing critique is not easy, but it’s an essential part of the acting craft. By approaching feedback with an open mindset and a willingness to improve, you’ll position yourself for greater success in the industry. Trust the process, learn from every experience, and continue to hone your skills.
