Last week, I did an audition for a new series filming in Atlanta this month. The role is a co-star role in one episode. Yesterday I got an email from my agent for an “avail check” for that series.
What is an “avail check”?
An “avail check” is a message from a casting director that asks if an actor is available to work on a specific day. It’s a courtesy that indicates the actor is one of the top choices for the role. “Avail” can also mean that the actor is one of a few people being considered for the role, or that they might be a backup choice.
How Long After the “avail check” Should I Find Out
The last time I got an “avail check” was for the movie Trouble Man!, starring Michael Jai White. I got the check and within a couple of hours, I had the contract for the role. From talking to more experienced actors, it could take a few days to find out if I got the role. But as per usual in this industry, if I don’t get the role, I might never hear back.
“Avail checks” are not offers or guarantees of work, but it does mean you’re close. It also means the casting director likes you and your audition. And being that this audition was for Erica Arvold, that makes me happy, even if I don’t get the role.
