Take Acting Classes: Why Even Natural Talent Benefits from Acting Classes

Many people think they don’t need acting classes because they have been told that they are ‘a natural’. Yeah, I’ve been told that too, but I still take classes.

Along with learning the art of acting or improving your skills, there are other arguments for taking classes.

  • It’s networking. I still talk to my first acting instructor regularly. He’s been in this business for decades and is a veritable font of knowledge. Whenever I have a question about the business, he’s the one I ask.
  • On camera acting classes teaches you how to act specifically in front of a camera. Blocking, hitting your mark, framing, angles that work and ones that don’t, etc.
  • It gives you something to put on your resume. When I first started, I had zero acting experience and no credits to my name. But since I was taking two classes, I had those on my resume and it showed casting directors that I am serious about being an actor.
  • It could get you a referral for an agency. If you really are as good as you think you are, and your instructor thinks the same, they could refer you to an agency. Some agencies only take actors on referral.
  • It teaches you to break down a scene and a character. There is much more work to acting than just acting. You need to know how to dissect a scene and character to properly play that role.
  • You make friends. I am still friends with some of my fellow classmates. We talk regularly, meet regularly and support each other in our careers.
  • Finding an agent. Most agencies will not even consider an actor with no classes.
